Track my investment account from my transactions

The transaction-based manual investment account: what it's for, who it's for, and how to create it.

Written by Pierre-Luc Schaming

With a classic manual investment account, you enter what you hold at a given moment: you can't record a sale or look back at a past operation. The new manual investment account works from your transactions. You enter your buys, sells, deposits and withdrawals, and Finary rebuilds the history of your holdings, your unit cost and your performance, including the gains you have already realised. Prices update automatically, except for holdings you add by hand.

It's the solution if your institution isn't synced with Finary, if its sync only brings in the balance, or if you want to track an account exactly as it appears on your statement.

Not to be confused: only new accounts work this way. Your existing manual accounts stay as before (no History tab, holdings added without history) and can't be converted yet. To track an existing account through its transactions, create a new one.

Create the account

  • On the web: click Add assets, choose Investment account, then Manual entry.

  • On mobile: open Add assets, choose Investment accounts, then Manual entry.

Then fill in the Type (brokerage account, life insurance…), the Account name and the Account currency. For a life insurance contract, also enter the contract. The Institution is optional.

The cash available is optional too: the field is called Cash balance. If you fill it in, it is recorded as a Deposit dated today (see Manage the cash in my manual account).

Submit: your account is ready. All that's left is to fill it (see Add holdings and transactions to my manual account).

Good to know

  • No import: importing transactions from a file isn't available yet, so each transaction is entered by hand.

  • Securities outside the catalogue: on the web, a security, a euro fund or a crowdlending holding that the search doesn't find is added with Add a manual holding. On mobile, only a euro fund or a crowdlending holding can be added this way, with Add it myself. Finary can't price these holdings: keeping their price up to date is up to you (see Add holdings and transactions to my manual account).

  • Cash: your buys and sells don't update your cash yet (see Manage the cash in my manual account).

  • Budget and passive income: these transactions stay within the account. They don't appear in your Budget and aren't categorised there, and the distributions you enter don't appear in Passive income (Past tab).

  • Deleting the account: this erases its transactions and history, and removes it from your net worth charts.
