Editing an asset's buying price

How to add or edit an asset's buying price (average cost) in the asset view, and what to know before doing it on a synced asset.

Written by Pierre-Luc Schaming

Some synced accounts don't show your gains/losses, or show different returns from what you see at your institution. This usually happens because the bank or insurer doesn't send us your buying price. In that case, we use the asset's value at the time it was added to Finary. You can enter the buying price per unit yourself to get an accurate P&L.

How to edit the buying price

On the webapp

  1. Go to Portfolio and open the relevant investment (or crypto) account.

  2. In the Holdings tab, find the asset's row, click the "…" at the end of the row, then Edit.

  3. Enter the Buying price per unit, then click Done.

On the mobile app

  1. Open the relevant account, then the Holdings tab.

  2. Tap the asset's row, then Edit.

  3. Enter the Buying price per unit and confirm.

For SCPIs, real estate or other assets (watches, precious metals, artwork…), the buying price is edited from the asset's Settings > Information tab.

Synced vs manually-added assets

For a synced asset, only the buying price can be edited, because the asset's name and quantity come from your institution.

Editing the buying price disables automatic recovery of the buying price reported by your institution — and this is permanent (setting the value back to 0 doesn't re-enable it). However, if your quantity later increases on a sync (for example after buying more), Finary automatically recalculates your average buying price: it keeps the price you entered for the units you already held, and applies the current market price to the new units.

For a manually-added asset, you can edit every field (name, quantity, buying price).
