Performance measurement is an essential aspect of investing. You can't improve what you don't measure.
Unrealized profit or loss
Unrealized profit or loss, also called P&L, is the true measure of your performance. It is the difference between your average purchase price and the current price at a given time.
This calculation ignores deposits and withdrawals. We only calculate your +/- value when a purchase price is indicated.
Formula: (Current price - average buying price) * quantity
We only calculate the +/- value for investments:
Shares & Funds
Real Estate
Crypto
Startups
Precious metals
Other assets
The following categories are excluded from the performance calculation:
Bank accounts
Loans
Credit cards
Saving Accounts
Fonds Euros
Crowdlending
My capital gain is incorrect
This can happen when you have synchronized accounts.
You can add or modify the purchase price of all assets via the app or web version. This will allow you to calculate your true capital gain.
Go to the account containing the asset with the incorrect performance.
Click on "...", then click on Edit.
Edit the value in the buying price field. You cannot change the currency.
💡 Good to know: we cannot calculate your PRU for crypto exchanges (Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Bitpanda) as well as Wallets. Therefore, you must add it manually on your side to have an accurate performance.
Discrepancies between my Finary performance & that displayed on my broker
This can happen for several reasons:
The asset purchased is in a foreign currency (e.g., Tesla, listed in USD). We do not know the purchase date, and therefore cannot apply the exchange rate of that day.
The average buying price is missing -> it is not transmitted by some financial institutions, as well as crypto exchanges (Binance, Kraken, Coinbase, Bitpanda) or Wallets (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc). We fallback on the price of each asset at the time of addition as the purchase price. You can edit it to adjust the P&L calculation.
An account has been temporarily disconnected. This explains why performance on intermediate periods such as "7 days", "1 month" or "1 year" can be distorted. The value will still be correct on the the “All” period.
💡 Good to know: we are currently working on a fix that will prevent this type of problems from occurring in the future.
What happens in case of selling an investment?
Have you sold an investment with a gain? This generates a realized capital gain. This type of performance is not currently taken into account due to technical limitations related to synchronizations. Finary does not have enough information to calculate it.
The capital gain displayed on your account is always the unrealized capital gain. Therefore, there may be differences between what your broker or exchange displays and Finary.
Adding realized capital gains requires significant development on our part. The feature is currently under review, and you can vote for it in our community.
