Create, edit and delete a custom category

Learn how to create your own Budget categories and subcategories, edit them and delete them.

Written by Pierre-Luc Schaming

On top of the default categories, you can create your own categories and subcategories to organise your Budget exactly the way you want.

💡 Creating custom categories is included in the Finary Plus and Pro plans. Everything happens from a transaction: there is no dedicated category management screen.

🖥️ On Web

Create a custom category

  1. Go to the Budget section of your account

  2. Click on a transaction, then on its category to open the full list

  3. Click "Add a custom category"

  4. Choose a name, an icon and a colour. To make it a subcategory, select a "Main category"

  5. Confirm. That's it!

💡 Good to know: to add a subcategory to an existing category, open that category in the list and use "Create a subcategory".

Edit or delete a custom category

  1. From the same category list, find your custom category or subcategory

  2. Click the "Edit" button that appears next to it

  3. You can then change its name, icon, colour or main category

  4. To delete it, click "Delete category", then confirm

📱 On the app

  1. Open the Budget tab (at the bottom of the app)

  2. Select a transaction, then tap its category

  3. To create: tap "Add a custom category" (or "Create a subcategory" from an existing category)

  4. To edit or delete: tap "Edit category" next to your custom category, then "Delete category" and confirm

What you should know

My new category doesn't appear in the filter

A category only appears in the "All categories" filter once at least one transaction is assigned to it and included in the analysis. So a category you have just created is normally absent from the filter until you have assigned a transaction to it.

What happens to my transactions if I delete the category?

Your transactions are not deleted. They simply go back to the automatic category they were originally assigned to.

⚠️ Deleting a main category also deletes all of its subcategories. This is permanent: a deleted category cannot be recovered.

Can I delete a default category?

No. Only the categories you created can be edited or deleted. Default categories can however be hidden from your Budget.
